Aseity is one of the most remarkable attributes of God. The term, "aseity," comes from the roots "a" and "se," which literally mean "from self." Webster's dictionary defines aseity as, "the quality or state of being self-derived or self-originated; specifically: the absolute self-sufficiency, independence, and autonomy of God. (1) To claim that God has aseity, therefore, is to claim that God is not dependent upon anyone else for His existence. That is, God is the explanation for His own existence. Indeed, God has existence in Himself. One way to view this attribute is to point out that a Being with aseity cannot fail to exist. A Being with aseity must always have existed, and cannot stop existing. This is one attribute of God that Christians throughout the history of the church have agreed that God possesses.
