The Gospel of John has a very unique introduction. It introduces Jesus as the eternal Word, the logos, Who was with God in the beginning. Whereas the synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) begin either with His birth or the beginning of His ministry, John decides to go back to the beginning.
John tells us here that Jesus, the logos, was with God in the beginning. Jesus existed with God and had a personal relationship with God before the creation of the universe. Yet he remains distinct from God. If he and God were not distinct personalities, it would do the author of this Gospel no good to say that the logos was with God.
Since Jesus has lived in a relationship with God since the beginning, it is imperative that we follow His example. Of course, we cannot go back to the beginning of the universe and observe. However, we can look at His life and choose to imitate Him. When we imitate His life with our lives, we can live in a right relationship with God, and that is what life is all about.
