It had been a victory for the Israelites. After 400 years of slavery in Egypt, the Israelites were now free, thanks to God. After exiting Egypt, the Israelites walked across the Red Sea on dry ground. They had witnessed the Creator of the universe part the sea for them, but not for the Egyptian army that wanted to kill them!
After reaching the other side, the Israelites almost immediately began to sing praises to God. This was a response that was appropriate for the occasion. In fact, one song of praise is a small thing in comparison to God's miraculous deliverance of the Israelites! Not much later, however, the Israelites had a much different attitude.
Less than one week after crossing the Red Sea, the Israelites were already complaining. Their entire attitude had changed. They no longer sang praises to God. What they did not realize is that the God who brought them this far was not done with them yet. God already had provisions in mind for the Israelites.
The Israelites' complaining eventually led to their wandering around the desert for 40 years. Every time we stop praising God, we make things more difficult on ourselves. Whether it is a shorter temper or wondering around the desert for 40 years, life becomes a challenge. What can we do? We can choose to continue to praise God in the hard times, knowing that He has an ultimate plan. He brought us to this point, and He will see us through. Trust Him. Praise Him.
