Most of us know Matthew 5 as the chapter that contains the be-attitudes. You know, the opening of the Sermon on the Mount. However, Matthew 5 also contains much more than the be-attitudes. I am not belittling the be-attitudes. I am simply saying that they are not the entire content of this chapter.
In Matthew 5, Jesus taught His disciples. He also told them, very straightforwardly, that they were the salt of the earth. Notice that Jesus said this to His disciples. He did not say this to someone who rejected God, or who did not follow Him. It is our responsibility, as Christians, to "flavor" our culture by infusing it with the love of God. It is not the responsibility of the lost. How can they infuse our culture with the love of God if they do not have the love of God?
How can we influence our society in this way? We can remember that it is never inappropriate to reach out and love our neighbor. We can set the example, so that others can see what it truly looks like to follow Christ. We can do these things, and so much more. What will you do today that will show those in your sphere of influence what the love of God looks like?
