Far too many people in the world do not study the Bible. Did you know that the vast majority of Americans have at least one Bible in their house? How many of these study it? I am not talking about simply reading the Bible. I am talking about taking the time to think about what it says. Does it really matter whether or not we meditate on what the Bible says?
The short answer is a loud "YES!" It is important that we study the Bible. It is important that we understand what it says, what it means, and how to apply it to our own lives. We can all study the Bible. It does not take a theologian.
This passage of Scripture tells us exactly why we should study the Bible. God's word becomes a lamp for our feet. When we study the Bible, it is as if a light has shone on our feet along the path of life. This allows us to see where we are stepping. If we understand and apply what has been shown (where we are stepping), then we will be less likely to fall.
We are also told that God's word is like a light for our path. Notice that it is not only our feet and the place that we are walking that can be seen with the light of God's word. It is the entire path on which we walk. Whenever we study God's word, we see the path we are on from beginning to end. Those who do not study and apply God's word do not see this. How can we more effectively study God's word? After studying God's word, are we willing to take the effort to apply it? I am willing. Are you?
