Stop and think for a minute: What is most important to you. In all honesty, what do we consider most important? Is it success? Money? Love? God? Honestly, the last answer is the one that we should be able to honestly give.
Anything that becomes more important to us than God is an idol. We are warned multiple times in Scripture to avoid idolatry. In Exodus, God commanded the Israelites to avoid idolatry when He gave them the Ten Commandments. The Old Testament prophets warned the Israelites of the consequences of their idolatry. Now, John the apostle is warning his audience against idolatry.
If we could go through and remove all of the idols from our lives, how much better off do you think we would be? Where would we be in our spiritual walk? I can all but guarantee that, if we were to remove all idols from our lives and follow Jesus, we would be farther than we are now.
There is no commandment greater than for us to love God with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength. But how can we love God with all of our heart if there are idols in the way? How can we love God with all of our mind when we constantly think about our idols? How can we love God with all of our strength when we spend so much time with our idols, or working for our idols? The point is that we cannot.
I want us all to think hard today about our lives. I want us to look at our lives and determine whether or not there is anything more important to us than God. If there is, we should remove it from our lives immediately. We should then determine to spend the time normally spent on the idol in prayer, Scripture reading, etc. We must not allow idols to come between us and God. The outcome could be terrible.
