How can we stay on the right path? What can be done to help us in our spiritual walk with God? I believe that part of the answer to this question lies in Psalm 119:35.
The author of Psalm 119 was talking to God. In a sense, Psalm 119 was a prayer. It was no short prayer, either. This is the first thing that we must learn here. One of the first things for us to do to help us in our spiritual walk with God is to pray. This is not optional. This is mandatory. We must also not grow into the habit of only making short prayers in passing. Rather, we must devote time each and every day to prayer.
The author of Psalm 119 asked for one thing in particular, however. He asked that God help him to stay on the path of God's commands. This is also important. We should pray for help in staying on the right path, just as the author of Psalm 119 did.
We must, however, keep our part of the bargain. If we ask God to help us stay on the right path, we must also give 100% to staying on the right path. This is also mandatory. If we ask for this, yet do not give 100% in trying to follow through, it is as though we have lied to the God of the universe. We have said that we want something that we do not really want. We have asked for something that we do not really want to receive. If we ask God to lead and guide us, we must be ready for Him to guide us.
Finally, the author of Psalm 119 makes it clear that he takes pleasure in staying on the path of God's commands. When we obey God, we may find that we, too, take pleasure in obedience to Him.
