Jesus's crucifixion was near. One of the final things that Jesus did before His crucifixion was to pray. However, Jesus was not praying for Himself. Rather, He began praying for His disciples! Rather than concerning Himself with His own troubles, He prayed that God would help the disciples through the troubles that they would go through!
From this, we can see how important prayer really is. If prayer were not important, why would the Savior of the world take time to pray while He was carrying the weight of the world on His shoulders? We also learn that Christ's focus was not on Himself. He was concerned about His disciples, and you!
One of the things that Jesus asked God for was to sanctify the disciples. He wanted the disciples to be sanctified by the truth. Here, Jesus affirms the truth of God's word, as well as shows us the importance of studying the Bible and the life of Jesus. When we study His word, He does a work in us that changes us.
So what can we do today to apply this? We can take time every day to pray. Pray for everyone you know, listing them by name. Sometimes this may mean getting up early or going to bed late. We can also commit to studying God's word every day. We can read the Bible through each year. Perhaps we could even read through the Gospels two or three times each year. If Jesus thought that these two things are important, shouldn't they be an important part of our lives?
