James, once again, gives us some practical advice for living. James here gives us three pieces of advice on how to live our lives. First, James tells us that we are to submit to God. Second, he reminds us that we should resist the devil. Third, we are told that we should draw near to God.
The first piece of advice that James offers us here is to submit to God. James also gives us the reason why this is important. God "gives grace to the humble" (James 4:6). When we humble ourselves and submit to God, He in turn gives us grace. God's grace may not come in the way or in the time that we want it to. However, we are assured that, when we humble ourselves before God, He will give us grace.
Second, James tells us that we should resist the devil. James also tells us that, when we resist the devil, the devil flees from us. When we are tempted, the best thing that we can do is to resist it with everything that we have. If this means that we avoid certain behaviors or stay away from certain places, then we must avoid these things. The devil is not one to stick around when he sees that he is losing. He runs away like a coward when he realizes that he will not win.
Third, James tells us to draw near to God. As with the other two pieces of advice, James also gives us a reason for this. Whenever we draw near to God, God will draw near to us. Drawing closer to God begins with a conscious decision to follow Him. From there, it involves changing our lives around to please Him. We come to Christ for grace, and we choose to listen to and obey God. When God sees us drawing closer to Him, He will also draw closer to us.
